Nationalist Music--Music that represents America

On Wednesday, we listened to 2 pieces by Aaron Copland that were supposed to represent America.  “Appalachian Springs” paints a picture of the American landscape and pioneer spirit, and “Fanfare for the Common Man” represented the ideals of the American Dream.  Do you think he accomplishes this in his music? Why or why not?  Use the comment section below to answer this question.

  1. Sydni Phu! the Appalachian spring music he represents the dream of a America very well, by showing we want more nature and beauty. The Fanfare for the common man was very opposite of the first song more tough like representing how tough the world is getting. Sydni Phu! :p

  2. I think he does, because the first piece shows just how beautiful nature is in America. The second piece also tells how important every man can be. I think the tempo of the music and his choice in instruments help you paint a picture in your mind and really show just how great and beautiful America is. So, yes, I think he accomplished what he was going for.

I think that he did a good job with Appalachian Spring, it does remind me of many different landscapes at different times in the song. I think Aaron Copeland described America well in this song.
With Fanfare for the Common Man, it is a good song, but I don't see how it describes America at all. I understand the title-to show that the common man is special and that he should be announced as someone more then the common man. However, I don't think that he really accomplished that in the music that he wrote.

  4. Alex!!! I think he achieved his goal because he makes me feel like I'm walking through Americas's most beautiful natural places! The second one makes me feel like i can do anything! I really enjoy both!
